WHAT IS INTERLOCK?

The Ignition Interlock Program (IIP) is a mandatory program for all individuals who have been convicted of an impaired driving offence in Alberta. Drivers are required to install an ignition interlock device into the vehicle, the minimum mandatory participation term can be found on your Notice of Suspension. Individuals must demonstrate a sustained ability to separate drinking and driving behaviors prior to completing the program.

MYTHS ABOUT INTERLOCK

The device will never turn your vehicle off. It will tell you to pull over if and an alarm horn, installed under the hood, will go off until you find a safe place to pull over.

The device is equipped with a 3 Volt Lithium Ion battery which will maintain the memory while the vehicle is off and the handset is unplugged. The system is also programmed to power down after fifteen minutes of inactivity.

No, you are required to provide a breath sample prior to starting the vehicle.
